The Academic Urology Unit at Sheffield University was established in 1999 by the founding Chair, Professor Freddie Hamdy. The Unit has been the recipient of two grants awarded recently by the UK Department of Health through its Health Technology Assessment(HTA) panel to fund a multicentre randomised trial of case-finding and treatment in early prostate cancer, the ProtecT (Prostate testing for cancer and Treatment) study, in collaboration with Professor Jenny Donovan in Bristol, and Professor David Neal in Cambridge; and the second from the National Cancer Research Institute, in partnership with 5 other UK universities including Bristol, Cambridge, Manchester, Newcastle and York, to form a Collaborative to investigate mechanisms of disease progression in prostate cancer. The Unit consists of a team of 24 staff dedicated to urological research, and has expertise in the management of urological malignancies, specifically early prostate cancer, and in the biology of skeletal metastases. The mission statement is to continue expanding its contribution to clinical and basic science urological research, and to foster international academic excellence in Urology. Training represents an important task of the Unit, including PhD students and Research Fellows'
